Our walk this Sunday 12th of May, will be a walk with a difference…departing from our usual “hill walking” this Sunday we are planning to walk around Camlough lake. As a result of the ongoing work at the lake, water has been drained and water levels are unusually low, making this the ideal time for us to explore its shores .

This will be a one group walk, all walkers should be wearing walking boots and have a water proof jacket, bring a torch… (all will be revealed),  also a packed lunch. Expect to be out 3/4 hours. Meet at the Gap O’ the North Pub, Jonesborough at 10 am for registration and details about our route. Newcomers are always welcome, check out the FAQ page of our website www.gaponorth.co.uk for further information re: fitness, our groups, basic equipment needed, membership etc.

The following walk will be Saturday 25th of June, when we are heading to Rathlin Island, there will be no Sunday walk that weekend. All members going to Rathlin please bring the outstanding balance this Sunday.

Slieve Brack

Slieve Brack

Tomorrow, Sunday 15th of May we are staying local with a 1 Group walk on Slieve Brack. Our Leaders have been out this week checking out the damage caused by the recent fire and ascertained that it won’t impact our route: starting in Forkhill we will walk over to the Tower, along the side of the mountain towards Mullaghbawn and then to the summit. We’ll come down through the woods to the Mass Rock, from there over to the long deserted cottages, and then we will take a new route to the Shean side of the mountain, heading north to the masts and the summit. From here we can survey the view and the fire damage!!! Then back down the gully to the Tower and retracing our steps into Forkhill.

Everyone is welcome…as a guide to fitness needed our recommendation is : if you can walk from the bottom car park at Slieve Gullion, following the road and tourist path, to the Southern Cairn at the summit and back again in around 3 hours you are fit enough to walk with our lowest level group our C Group.

You will need walking boots and a waterproof jacket. Bring a packed lunch. In this current spell of good weather don’t forget the SUN CREAM!! Expect to be out 3/3.5 hours. All walkers must meet at Gap O’ The North Pub Jonesborough at 10 am for registration and safety briefing.

Following walk on Sunday 29th of May- Slieve Bernagh, Mournes, bus will leave from the Gap at 10 am on the morning, price £5/person. This will be a 2 Group walk.

Slieve Gullion

We’re walking this Sunday 3rd of April…on one of our favourite mountains…Slieve Gullion. We’ll have 2 groups out both completing looped walks, starting from the Courtyard and going to the Summit, they will follow different routes, and will vary in distance and pace.

Our C Group will follow a 9 km route to the summit, known locally as “Up the Wire” this leads directly to the Cailleach Beara’s Lake, from there we will cross to the Southern Cairn and then follow the Tourist path back to the Courtyard. Our B Group will follow the Famine Wall to the summit, will take in the King’s Table, the Lake, and both Cairns, before descending. This route will be around 12 km and at a much faster pace than that of the C Group. Both Groups will be out for around 3.5/4 hours.

If you’d like to join us you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness, as a rough guide… if you can walk from the Courtyard to the Summit, (along the road and up the Tourist path), and back within 3 hours you are at a fitness level to comfortably join our C Group. To join our B group you would need to complete the same route in around 2 hours. In total this is around 10 km and climbs around 500 m, the terrain is good underfoot making for faster than normal times.

We meet at 10 am at the Gap O’ the North Pub Jonesborough for registration and safety/route briefing, all walkers must have walking boots, a waterproof jacket and bring a packed lunch.

Members please note: Membership is now due, £20 or 25 Euros for the year.

Also anyone wishing to join us on our Saturday walk on the 30th of April into Carlingford, only a few places remain and must be paid for this Sunday, cost £10/person.
