Summer Family Walk 2
Tomorrow, Sunday 27th of July we have the second in our series of Family Summer Walks. These walks are open to members and non-members alike. They are shorter, at a slower pace and involve less climbing than our usual hikes, so ideal for anyone wanting to see if Hill Walking is for them, or wanting to check out their fitness levels before joining one of our regular walks. Members go free, there is a charge of £5/ walk for non-members, attend all 4 walks and you will have paid your membership and will be a fully-fledged “Gappy”!!!
You will need walking boots and a waterproof jacket, rain is forecast for tomorrow but with a bit of luck we may avoid it! Bring a packed lunch and a drink.
Children are welcome and go free but remain the responsibility of their accompanying adult. Please consider their age and stamina before dragging them out, these walks are definitely not suitable for very young kids or push chairs.
This week we will be on Carrickbroad Mountain walking at times on rough open hillside, more in keeping with the terrain of our usual walks. If you are interested in seeing the local area from a different perspective and learning a little about its history, then meet at 12 noon in the Gap car park for registration, from where we will drive the short distance to our starting point.
Charity Cycle & Hike
Well done to everyone who took part in our hike with the Jonesboro’ Charity Cycle event on Sunday. For those of you who don’t know, our hill walking group grew out of the Charity Cycle around 3 years ago. From a handful of locals involved in the cycle event, it has since grown to a Hill Walking Club of around 80 members, from across the South Armagh, North Louth and South Down areas.
From its initiation the club has been committed to walking in the local area and we are probably the only club regularly walking in the Ring of Gullion on; Croslieve, Camlough, Tiffcrum, Fathom and Carrickbroad mountains.
We meet every second Sunday at 10 am in the Gap pub Jonesboro’. Walks last for around 4 hours and there is always a warm welcome back at the Gap after each walk.
Our next walk is Croslieve, (Forkhill mountain), on the 20th of July. If you enjoyed Sunday’s Hike and would like to join us on one of our regular more challenging walks, check out our FAQ page for details about kit, levels of fitness required etc.
Remember all the money you helped raise through participating in Sunday’s event goes to a range of worthy local charities, including NI Cancer Fund for Children, Newry and District Gateway Club, Carrickore Children’s Parents’ Group, Helping Hand and Meningitius Now.
Charity Cycle & Hike
We are joining forces with the Jonesboro’ Charity Cycle for our walk this Sunday 6th of July.
There is a 20 k cycle, a family walk and a more strenuous hike as part of the sponsored events. All events begin and end at the bottom of Jonesboro’ Hill, (registration from 11.15 on the morning), and are timed so that everyone finishes in and around the same time, then it’s back to the Gap for a day’s entertainment! BBQ and music in the garden weather permitting, activities for the kids and a series of events are planned for throughout the day and night. There is a €20 sponsor fee for all participants, (or a family fee of €20 for those wishing to take the kids), otherwise pick up a sponsor card and gather a few pounds sponsorship for the day, amounts large or small are equally welcome. You can pick up a sponsor card from the Gap Pub Jonesboro’ or Mulkerns Eurospar, Killeavy. Check out the Charity Cycle’s face book page for more details: https://www.facebook.com/Jonesborocharitycycle
Summer Walks
The sun’s shining and it is a perfect morning for a walk, so why not come join us, for a local 2 hour walk in Ravensdale! This is the first of our Summer walks open to members and non-members, these walks will be shorter, slower and will involve less climbing than our usual hikes, so ideal for anyone wanting to see if Hill Walking is for them, or wanting to check out their fitness levels before joining one of our regular walks. Members go free, there is a charge of £5/ walk for non-members, attend all 4 and you will have paid your membership and will be fully fledged “Gappy”!!!
You will need walking boots and waterproof jacket, (hopefully you won’t need it but it’s always better to be prepared!). Bring a packed lunch and a drink. Sun cream would be wise today, (we don’t often get to say that). Children are welcome and go free but remain the responsibility of their accompanying adult. Please consider their age and stamina before dragging them out, these walks are definitely not suitable for very young kids or push chairs.
Walks are graded according to difficulty so this morning we will be gentle on you and start you off with an easier walk, but over the Summer they will become increasingly difficult and we will be walking at times on open hillside on rough terrain, more in keeping with our usual walks. So if you are interested in seeing the locality from a different perspective meet us this morning at 12 noon in the Gap car park for registration.
