Spectacular views in store for our walkers this Sunday, 11th of November when we travel to the Mournes and take on the 3 Slieves: Loughshannagh, Meelbeg and Meelmore. Both walks are 4+ hours and both routes guarantee great views and the forecast is looking promising for Sunday!!!
Meet at the Gap O’ the North, Jonesborough for 10 am, we will be leaving promptly at 10.15. As always we will be car pooling, but please note Groups are starting from different points.
All walkers must have a waterproof jacket, walking boots and a packed lunch. As it’s always colder on the hills, (even if the sun is shining), please layer up and bring a hat and gloves.
We head to the Galtees in Co Tipperary this weekend for our Annual Away Trip… and a popular trip it has turned out to be, with around 65 heading off!
Our B Group walk is a strenuous, horseshoe, looped walk starting and finishing in the Glen of Aherlow. It takes in 4 peaks: Cush, Galtymore, Galtybeg and Cushnabinnia. C Group will start on the opposite side of the range and climb Galtymore via the Black’s Road route and descend also into the Glen of Aherlow. Both groups will meet up in Moroney’s Pub of Lisvernane to swap stories and partake of a well deserved drink or two.
The forecast over the next few days is stormy but we are hopeful it will have blown over by Saturday morning. The Committee will make a call on the planned routes if the storm tracks more slowly, alternative routes offering greater shelter may be taken.
Walkers are reminded to pack plenty of layers of clothing, waterproofs and gaiters, both routes are likely to be slippery and muddy in places.
Bus leaving from the Gap at 2.15 pm Friday, we won’t be waiting on anyone!!!
Don’t worry about walking interfering with your viewing of the All Ireland Final this Sunday, 2nd of September, we are staying local so that we are back in plenty of time for kick-off! This week we take to the Ravensdale Ridges with a mix of forest trails and open hillside you will be guaranteed spectacular views both back towards the Ring of Gullion and out over Dundalk Bay.
We meet in the Gap O’ the North Pub, Jonesborough at 10 am for registration and walk/safety briefings before we head off to our starting point… just down the road. All walkers must have walking boots and a water/windproof jacket, bring a packed lunch and expect to be out for 3+ hours.
A reminder to everyone travelling to the Galtees on our Away Trip this October all outstanding money must be paid in full this Sunday.
This year we are off to the Galtees, 12-14th of October for our now legendary, “Annual Away Trip”! Our scouting teams have been down Tipperary way and the routes for both an amazing B and C walk finalised, with Galtymore the highest inland peak at 919 m, the pinnacle of both walks!
Briefly our B’s will walk the Galty Horseshoe, starting on the Northern side of the Range, taking in Cush (639 m), Galtybeg (799m), then Galtymore (919 m) before descending by Slievecushnabinnia (766m). Our C’s will start on the Southern side taking a track called the Black Road, leading to the coll between Galtybeg and Galtymore, from there they will climb Galtymore, cross the top and take the same descent route via Slievecushnabinnia as our B Group. Both are long strenuous walks, around 5/5+ hours, but will end as always in a local pub for a well deserved pint and a bit of craic!
Please note, we are nearly at full capacity on this trip… even before we have advertised… so anyone intending to walk with us and not already on our list with their deposit paid, would need to get in touch asap! Cost is 200 Euros, which includes: bus to and from Tipperary, (and to and from walk starting/ending points), 2 nights B+B, 2 evening meals in the Cahir House Hotel, and a packed lunch for the walk. Places are filled on a “first come, first served basis” and only payment in full secures a place. All money must be paid in full by mid September.
Please note anyone intending to walk on this trip, must be out walking with us in the lead up to the trip away. Our walks over August/September are purposefully planned to be more challenging walks to prepare everyone for the event ahead.
