The Brandy Pad

Our next walk Sunday 29th September, we will have the privilege of hiking an old smuggling path, “The Brandy Pad” through the mountains of Mourne.  Brandy as well as tea, coffee, tobacco, soap and wine were all loaded onto pack ponies which then trekked from Bloody Bridge River, through the Mournes to their destination in Hilltown.  We will be following in the footsteps of the smugglers on this linear route. Bus will leave us at Trassey Track, we will head to Hare’s Gap picking up the Brandy pad to Bloody Bridge.  B’s will do similar route but also covering Slieve Commedagh.  Walk will be aprox. 3.5 hrs.  Please note that there is a lengthy road distance between the starting and finishing points, the bus will not be available to drop people back to the starting point. The bus is £7 and will leave promptly from the Gap at 10.15.  Its recommend to do this walk to keep the fitness up for our Wicklow trip! There only a few places left for Wicklow if you want to go contact the club.

The amazing pic is of Hare’s Gap.

🚩All walkers must have walking boots, a waterproof jacket &hat.
🚩Bring a packed lunch.
🚩Sticks are highly advisable for this walk, and every walk.
🚩All new walkers are welcome but must walk the first walk with C’s.😉

Killeavy Walk

Killeavy Walk

The ruins of a homestead on the slopes of Slieve Gullion, one of many we will pass on our walk this Sunday, 1st of September. Following a new route, we will take in St Moninna’s Well, Killeavy Old Church, the Northern Cairn and the lake, on a 8+km looped walk.

Interested in joining us ? You will need walking boots, a water proof jacket and a packed lunch, expect to be out for around 4 hours, we will be walking on paths, tracks and open hillside and in places it will be boggy underfoot… we’re not sure that even a prayer to St Moninna will keep the feet dry… so we would strongly recommend gaiters.

Walk …Tobar Naoim Blatnaid

We are walking this Sunday, 1st of September a new route for us on Slieve Gullion… a 8+km looped walk on the Killeavy side of the mountain following in the footsteps of St Moninna.

St. Moninna, (432-518 AD) is believed to have been born in 432, the daughter of King Machta, who ruled the territory from Louth to Armagh. Tradition has it that when a child she was baptised and confirmed by St. Patrick. She went on to found Convents in Scotland, England, Wicklow, and closer to home at Faughart before finally settling at Killeavy. She died in 518 and is buried at Killeavy Old Church.

If you would like to visit this ancient site then why not join us on Sunday, new walkers are always welcome. You will need walking boots, a water proof jacket and a packed lunch, expect to be out for around 4 hours. We would strongly recommend gaiters on this walk, we will be walking on paths, tracks and open hillside and in places it will be boggy underfoot… we’re not sure that even a prayer to St Moninna will keep the feet dry!

We meet at Gap O’ the North Pub, Jonesborough, at 10 am, we ask everyone to be on time, it’s All Ireland Day and we want to be back in plenty of time for “Kick Off”… we will car pool, as parking is limited at our starting point.
