All walkers to meet at the Gap O’ the North pub Jonesboro’ for 10 am and we will car pool before driving to our starting point.( Please note this is not our regular parking spot) As this will be a linear walk we will need cars at both ends so we ask everyone to be on time so that we can get this sorted and away promptly.

The forecast isn’t great for Sunday, (although this might change as we get closer to the day), so please ensure you have a water/wind proof jacket. All walkers must be wearing walking boots, walking poles are recommended but not essential, bring a packed lunch.

Expect to be out for around 4 hours, a reasonable level of fitness is needed for further information check out the FAQ section of our web page for fitness and kit requirements. New walkers are always welcome, your first walk with us is free, if you enjoy the craic… and the walk…then membership is £20 for the year.

Our leaders on the day will decide on the number of groups going out, as we are in holiday season many of our regular walkers are away and we may walk as one group, depending on numbers.

A reminder to all members re: the Away Trip- Mweelrea, if you are interested Sunday is your last chance to register your interest with a deposit.

Away Trip 2015

Our Away Trip this Autumn is the weekend of the 2-4 th of October, and our destination is the beautiful village of Leenane about a half hour’s drive south of Westport at the head of Killary Harbour.

Our walks/routes will depend on who is with us, but the aim would be for at least one group to take in the summit of Mweelrea, (in Irish,“Cnoc Maol Reidh”, meaning “smooth bald hill”), it is the highest mountain in Connaught at 814 metres and the 16th highest in Ireland.

For anyone who has been with us on our previous Away Trips this will complete your climb of the highest peak in each of the 4 Provinces: Slieve Donard in Ulster, Lugnaquilla in Leinster, Carrauntoohil in Munster and now Mweelrea in Connaught.

If the previous Away Trips are anything to go by, you will be guaranteed good craic, good company and a cracking walk. The cost is the same as in previous years, €200 per person sharing, for 2 nights B&B, 2 evening meals and bus, including transport to the starting point for those climbing Mweelrea. An additional charge of €20 will apply to anyone wanting single room occupancy.  As always bus places will be limited and at a premium, so they will be filled on a first fully paid up basis after which people will have to make their own arrangements.

For non walking partners check out the hotel website for suggestions of things to do in area, but be aware we are staying in a remote area and you may need to organise taxi/ transport.

Check out- http://www.destinationwestport.com/places-to-visit/towns-and-villages/leenane/

for more information about Leenane, there is also a useful map showing exactly where the village is located. We will be staying in the Leenane Hotel – http://leenanehotel.com

Deposits need to be paid asap, €50 /person, (non refundable), final payment must be made by beginning of September.. Remember names on a list don’t count unless accompanied by payment!!!

Thanks Paula
